Any MIT students or alumni out there? I'm a junior with a dream of getting into MIT - yeah, I know it's a reach, who isn't it a reach for? But seriously, I'd appreciate any tips or insight into what it takes to get NTMIT. Thanks in advance!
Sure, happy to help! While MIT is a reach for everyone, there are certain areas they definitely focus on. First, the academics. Strong performance in rigorous courses, especially in math and science, is crucial. They’ll want to see evidence of this (i.e. high grades, high SAT/ACT scores) even if you're someone who’s excelling outside of school. They use a value called the Academic Index, which includes grades and test scores, to ensure students can handle the rigors of their curriculum.
But while academics are critical, they're not enough by themselves. MIT is filled with smart people, and to stand out, you'll want to show some level of exceptional achievement in an area of interest. Getting involved in some Tier 1 or Tier 2 extracurriculars related to your "spike" (or primary passion) is a great way to stand out. This could be anything from entering a math or science competition, doing a significant project or research in a specific field, or even something outside of STEM.
Your letters of recommendation and application essays are your chance to add more context and show a different side to your application, so make sure you choose recommenders who know you well and can talk about specific instances where you have shone. Also, ensure your essays reflect your intellectual curiosity, your passion, and your unique personality.
Lastly, MIT has their own application process separate from the Common App, so make sure you follow that accurately and submit all the necessary pieces.
Remember, while statistics and extracurriculars are important, the admissions process is highly subjective and can depend on numerous factors – so while you can understand and prepare for it, there are no guarantees. Best of luck!
