What's the average SAT score applicants aim for?

Hey y'all, I'm just trying to figure out my SAT study plan and set some goals. Anyone have an idea what a good 'average' SAT score would be? I'm planning to apply to a mix of safeties, matches, and reaches, if that helps. Thanks in advance!

In the context of SAT scores, there isn't truly an 'average' score to aim for. It really depends on the colleges you are aiming to attend.

As a general guide, the average SAT score for college-bound students is around 1050. This score, however, won't be very competitive at highly selective schools where the 50% middle score range often lies between 1450 and 1550.

A crucial concept to understand is the target SAT scores for each category of universities you are applying to: safeties, matches, and reaches. Safeties are generally below your 25% score range, matches are within your 25%-75% score range, and reaches are near or beyond your 75% score range. What's important to remember is that this range is unique to every student depending on their academic profile and prospective schools.

As a starting point, it's a good idea to look up the average SAT scores of students admitted to the specific colleges you're interested in. This information is usually available on each college's admissions webpage or on their Common Data Set.

When preparing for the SAT, it's always better to aim for the highest score you possibly can. That way, you open up as many options for yourself as possible. Then, once you have a score, you can align your college list and applications accordingly. A solid SAT prep plan, coupled with consistent practice and reviews of your weak areas after practice tests, should help you progress towards your goal.

Lastly, don't forget that standardized test scores are just one facet of your application. Schools also consider your GPA, coursework, essays, letters of recommendation, extracurriculars, and other factors when making admissions decisions. Good luck with your preparations!
