Hey y'all! I've been crushing on Parsons for a while now and thinking about applying. But, does anyone have any insights into their admissions process? What do they look at beside GPA and test scores?
Parsons School of Design -- great choice! I think something crucial to keep in mind is that Parsons emphasizes the student's portfolio above all else. It will significantly weigh your portfolio's quality, which should represent your best work and showcase your creative talent.
Typically, they require 8–12 pieces of your best work, and you can include a variety of media that fits into three categories: representation, observation, and creativity. Representation works show technical skill, observation works demonstrate your ability to perceive the world, and creativity works represent original concepts or personal expression. Be sure to choose pieces that display your skills and originality distinctly.
Over and above test scores and GPAs, Parsons is also interested in your statement of intent. Take your time and effectively articulate why you're interested in the activity you selected for the Project Anywhere section of the application. Your way of thinking and tackling projects is of great interest to them.
Finally, Parsons also values applicants who have dedicated significant time and resources to artistic pursuits outside the classroom. These could include internships, art clubs, awards in competitions, etc.
Good luck with your application! Just be yourself, be passionate, and let your creative spirit shine through your materials.
