SAT Distribution - What's the Deal?

Hey all, just curious about the SAT distribution of scores. Basically, where do most people fall on the scoring range? Is it more common to get a mid-range score, lower or higher?

When it comes to the SAT score distribution, it tends to fall into a normal, or bell-shaped, curve. Essentially, this means that most students score in the middle range, with fewer students achieving at the high and low ends of the spectrum.

In terms of specifics, the average score for the SAT is about 1050 out of 1600, which essentially means that a considerable number of people score around this figure. It's less common for students to achieve extremely high or extremely low scores, but keep in mind that these definitions can change depending on the degree of selectivity of the colleges you're interested in.

For instance, an elite, highly selective college might see scores above 1400 as being relatively common amongst their applicants because they attract a high-achieving pool of students. In contrast, a less competitive college's applicant pool might have a lot of scores in the lower to middle range. Overall, the distribution of SAT scores can be influenced by a wide range of factors such as the educational backgrounds of the test-takers, the selectivity of the colleges they're applying to, and the individuals' access to high-quality test prep resources.
