What does it mean to pursue a 'double degree'?

Hey guys. I was reading up on some college websites and they offered something called a 'double degree'. What does this mean? Is it beneficial? What are the pros and cons?

A 'double degree' program involves a student earning two separate degrees concurrently in two different fields. This is different from a double major, where a student earns a single degree with specializations in two subjects.

In a double degree program, you fulfill the complete requirements for both degrees and, upon graduation, you have two different diplomas. The fields of study can be related (like Economics and Business) or disparate (like Engineering and Music). The major advantage is that it allows students to explore two separate fields in-depth.

However, there are also cons to consider. These programs are generally more rigorous and time-consuming compared to single degree programs, so you may need to take classes over the summer, or even graduate late, to get everything done on time. Balancing the requirements of two different degrees with your extracurricular involvements and social life can also be challenging.

Overall, a double degree can be an excellent path for high-achieving students who are interested in breadth as well as depth in their education, or for those whose career goals require knowledge in two different areas. However, it's not the best fit for everyone due to the intensity and length of the program, and the vast majority of college students, including those who pursue highly competitive careers or graduate programs, graduate with just a single degree.

I hope this overview helps - good luck with your future academic endeavors!
