I've got my heart set on RSI for the summer coming up, brainy me is all about the research! Does anyone here know how to strengthen your candidacy? How competitive is it really? Hopefully, there are some RSI veterans here who might help a stressed junior out, thanks!
RSI is an amazing program, but as you might know, it's also quite competitive, admitting around 80 students each year from an extremely strong applicant pool from around the world. When preparing your application, here are a few things you might want to keep in mind:
1. High Grades in Math & Science: Your transcript plays a significant role. You should have mostly A's, especially in your math and science classes. Advanced coursework in these areas can further strengthen your application.
2. Strong Test Scores: If you have any, strong test scores (especially in math and science subjects) can boost your candidacy. Performances in any Math/Science olympiads or competitions can make you competitive as well.
3. Research Experience: RSI is a research-oriented program. Any previous research experience you have, perhaps at a local university or through another program, will further strengthen your application. Even if your attempts at research weren't completely successful, being able to articulate what you learned from the experience can set you apart.
4. Passion For Math/Science: Make sure you convey your genuine curiosity and passion for math and/or science. This can be demonstrated through your extracurricular activities, essay, or tangible projects you've undertaken related to these fields.
5. Recommendation Letter: A strong recommendation letter from math or science teachers who can vouch for your drive, intellectual curiosity, and work ethic can enhance your profile.
Given the competitive nature of the program, a well-rounded profile that showcases your academic prowess, passion in math/science, ability to conduct research, and perhaps something extra that makes you stand out (like a unique project or experience) is required.
Best of luck with crafting a strong application! Don't forget to keep your options open and consider other summer programs as well.
