What GPA is typically expected for admission into Umich?

Hey everyone, so I've been considering applying to the University of Michigan but I'm a bit unsure of where I stand GPA-wise. Can any current students or recent applicants shed some light on the average GPA of accepted students? I've heard admissions can be pretty competitive, but I'm hoping my extracurricular activities might help balance things out if my GPA is a bit low.

In admissions to the University of Michigan (known as UMich), a high GPA is certainly desirable! Generally speaking, the average GPA of accepted students at UMich tends to hover around a 3.8 - 4.0 (unweighted) on a 4.0 scale. This speaks to the high academic expectations and competitive nature of admissions.

Remember that your GPA is just one aspect of your application. UMich, being a selective institution, conducts a holistic review, meaning they're also interested in your course rigor, extracurricular involvement, letters of recommendation (encouraged but not required), and essays.

If your GPA is slightly lower than the average but you've pursued challenging coursework (like honors, AP, or IB classes) and have compelling extracurricular experiences, these factors could offset a relatively lower GPA.

However, do ensure to work on presenting a strong application overall, not just through your activities but also through compelling essays and strong letters of recommendation. Also, applying Early Action can give you a bit of an additional edge in comparison to Regular Decision applicants as it shows your keen interest in the University. Good luck with your application!
