Which Calculators are Allowed on the ACT?

Alright guys, I'm going to take the ACT soon and I was wondering what calculators are allowed? I've heard different things from different people, so could use the collective knowledge here to clear things up.

When it comes to taking the ACT, the rules for calculators can seem a bit confusing, but actually, the ACT allows for a pretty broad range of calculators. Here's a quick rundown for you.

1. Graphing Calculators: A majority of the graphing calculators are allowed. This includes popular ones like the Texas Instruments' TI-84 or TI-89.

2. Scientific Calculators: They are also permitted. Examples include the TI-30X or Casio's fx-300MS.

3. Four-Function Calculators: If you're more comfortable with a simple four-function calculator, those are allowed too.

However, there are certain types of calculators that are not allowed.

1. Calculators with built-in computer algebra systems are not allowed. The TI-89 is an exception here because although it does have a computer algebra system, it has been approved by the ACT.

2. Devices like phones, tablets, or laptops cannot be used as a calculator.

3. Calculators with a QWERTY keypad, like TI's TI-92, are also not allowed.

4. Additionally, calculators that require an electrical outlet, make noise, or have a paper tape are not permitted.

Make sure you're familiar with the functionality of your calculator before the exam. Knowing the ins and outs of your calculator can save you valuable time during the test. You're not required to use a calculator for all math questions, but having one definitely can make things easier for certain problems.
