What's the GPA requirement for the University of Arkansas?

Hey, guys! I'm currently a junior and targeting the University of Arkansas for my undergrad. Wondering, what's the typical GPA requirement? And do they look more at weighted or unweighted GPA? Also, any insight into the strength of extracurriculars I'd need to balance a lower GPA would be greatly appreciated!

For admission to the University of Arkansas, they consider both unweighted and weighted GPAs, but there's a slight preference towards a weighted GPA, as that implies a student has taken more rigorous AP or honors courses. While there's no minimum GPA requirement stipulated by the university, data suggests successful applicants typically have an average unweighted GPA of around 3.76. However, it's important to note that this is just an average as the University of Arkansas employs a holistic review process, meaning they consider all aspects of your application, not just your GPA.

Even though a strong GPA is important, a lower GPA can to some extent be countered by showing depth and dedication in extracurricular activities. Admissions committees tend to appreciate a commitment to one, or maybe a few, significant activities over several years, especially where you can demonstrate leadership, initiative, or personal growth. Activities can fall across a wide spectrum, ranging from athletics, arts, clubs, or community service to personal projects, professional commitments, or family responsibilities. Quality over quantity is usually the key.

Now, when it comes to balancing a somewhat lower GPA with strong extra-curricular achievements, that's where the 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars can come into play. The closer your activities fall to Tier 1 (rare, exceptional achievements at the national or international level), the more they're likely to offset a lower GPA. For example, getting recognized nationally for a significant research project in your intended field of study is going to be much weightier than volunteering sporadically at your local community center.

Keep in mind that these are general guidelines. Each applicant's situation is unique, and the admissions committee takes many factors into account when making their decisions.
