Leaving College & Thinking of Joining the Military - Your Thoughts?

Hey guys, I've been struggling with college and lately I've been contemplating a major choice - leaving school to join the military. I'd love to hear experiences from anyone who's done something similar. Also, could this move come back to bite me if I decide to return to college/post-military life?

I can understand why you might be considering this path. Joining the military could offer an immediate sense of direction, structured environment, and opportunities to gain valuable skills and experiences. It can also provide financial benefits like tuition support if you do decide to return to college later. Keep in mind, however, that serving in the military is a commitment that usually lasts several years and it can be both physically and emotionally demanding.

With respect to returning to college or transitioning to civilian life post-military, many veterans successfully make that transition. Most institutions of higher education have services to support veteran students, and your military experience might even provide you with a unique and valuable perspective to bring into the classroom.

However, it's important to fully research what specific branch of the military you are thinking of joining and understand the potential challenges and sacrifices that come with a military commitment. Have you spoken about your thoughts and feelings with a school counselor or academic advisor? They might be able to help you parse through your feelings of struggle at college and potentially point out alternatives you hadn't considered.

I'd also recommend talking to veterans or active military personnel that took similar routes and find out about their experiences. Their insights might prove invaluable. Could you see yourself being happy and fulfilled in a military career? Are there aspects of military life that draw you to it beyond just a desire for change or a sense of being overwhelmed with college? These are key things to consider.

Lastly, remember that it's totally fine and normal to feel unsure or overwhelmed by college or any major life decision. Make sure to take the time you need to explore all your options and choose the path that aligns with your goals and values.
