What's up with Emory University's admission requirements?

Hey folks! Considering Emory as one of my top choices, I'm a bit anxious about its admission requirements. Basically, I'm looking for specifics like course selection and the need for recommendation letters, etc. What kind of standards do they set for prospective students? Is there anything specific they like to see?

Emory University indeed has a competitive admission process, and understanding what they're looking for can certainly help in crafting a standout application.

In terms of academic requirements, Emory values rigorous course selection; they like to see that students have challenged themselves throughout their high school career. You should aim for a challenging curriculum that includes AP, IB, or honors classes, if your high school offers them.

For standardized tests, Emory is test optional for first year students who would start in Fall 2024. SAT/ACT scores are not required. If submitted, test scores will be reviewed as a demonstration of the applicant's academic preparation.

As for letters of recommendation, Emory requires one from a counselor, and one from a teacher. These letters help provide a broader perspective on your achievements within the context of your high school. The teacher recommendation should ideally be from a teacher in a core subject who knows you well.

Emory University practices holistic review which means they don't only consider your academic qualifications - they also heavily weigh who you are as a person and what you could contribute to the Emory community. This is where your essays and extracurricular involvement come in. Use your essays to highlight your unique experiences and perspectives, and to show off your ability to write well. Your extracurricular activities, meanwhile, should demonstrate your interests and commitment level. Operationalizing the 4-Tier rule, you should aim for at least several Tier 1 and Tier 2 extracurriculars, which show leadership or extraordinary achievement.

Finally, Emory offers an Early Decision application option. If the university is your top choice, applying Early Decision can significantly boost your chances of getting admitted. However, please do remember that this is a binding commitment, and ensure your family reviews the potential financial aid package before opting for this route.
