How Important are ACT Scores for Dartmouth Admissions?

Hey guys, I'm putting together my college list and Dartmouth is definitely up there. I know test scores aren't everything, but how important are ACT scores in the overall Dartmouth admissions process? Are there certain score ranges that applicants typically fall in?

ACT scores do play an important role in Dartmouth admissions, though they are not the absolute deciding factor. They're typically used in combination with other factors, like your coursework, grades, extracurricular involvement, essays and letters of recommendation, to form your Academic Index, which initial screening processes usually consider.

For the 2024-2025 application cycle, Dartmouth has discontinued its test-optional policy and will require all applicants to submit either an SAT or ACT score. Therefore, if you're planning on applying to Dartmouth, you will have to submit a standardized test score.

As for the ranges, Dartmouth typically sees applicants with very competitive scores: applicants in the 50th percentile usually have between a 33-35 on the ACT. That said, Dartmouth looks at more than just test scores. They focus on admitting academically exceptional students who have also demonstrated leadership and contribution within their communities in significant ways. So, while your ACT score is important, a lower score could potentially be offset by an otherwise outstanding application.
