Class Rank Determination - How Does It Work?

Rising junior here with a quick question. I'm vaguely aware that our class ranks are based on GPA somehow, but is it weighted or unweighted, and does it include everyone in our class? Any insights would be great, thanks!

Hi there! Class rank is typically determined using a student's weighted GPA as it reflects the rigor of their schedule, taking into account the higher level/AP classes that could potentially boost the GPA beyond 4.0. However, this can vary depending on the school's individual system. Some may use non-weighted GPA, and others may not rank students at all.

As for who the rank includes, in most cases, the class rank is relative to your entire graduating class. If your school follows a common form of ranking, known as 'decile ranking', they may divide the class into 10 equal parts and rank students based on which section they fall into, instead of giving a specific number.

That being said, every high school has its own method for class ranking. It would be best if you made an appointment with your guidance counselor or school's academic advisor to discuss these ranking policies in detail. They'll be able to provide accurate information about how your high school determines class rank.
