Hi guys, does anybody have any insight into what Georgia Tech is expecting GPA-wise for an incoming Freshman? And how they view weighted vs unweighted GPA? I'm really hoping to get in next year.
Georgia Tech is a highly selective institution, and successful applicants generally have very strong academic records.
While Georgia Tech does not publicly state a minimum GPA requirement for its applicants, it's important to note that the admitted freshman in 2023 had average GPAs around 4.1 on a weighted 4.0 scale. This doesn't mean that you can't get in with a GPA below that—it just gives you an idea of the academic rigor and high bar that is present among admitted students.
In terms of weighted versus unweighted GPAs, Georgia Tech considers both. However, they do tend to pay closer attention to the weighted GPA because it reflects the difficulty of the courses you took in high school. Meaning, they value students who challenge themselves with tougher classes, such as honors, AP, or IB courses. These more challenging courses increase your weighted GPA but are also valuable to colleges because they demonstrate your willingness to push yourself academically.
That said, having a high GPA alone won't secure your admission. Georgia Tech follows a holistic review process, meaning that they're also looking at the rigor of your high school curriculum, your extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, essays, and standardized test scores. So while striving for the strongest GPA possible is important, keep in mind that it's only one piece of your application.
Keep up the hard work, and best of luck on your application to Georgia Tech!
