What are some government-offered benefits of joining the military straight out of high school?

Hello everyone, the notion of enlisting in the military after graduating high school has been on my mind. But, before making the plunge, I'm keen to learn about the benefits listed on government sites. Has anyone got resources that can highlight this? Any help would be great!

The decision to enlist in the military right out of high school is quite significant and it's commendable that you're taking the time to research the benefits. While I can't provide direct links to government websites, I can certainly outline some of the primary benefits that the U.S. government offers to military personnel.

1. Post-Secondary Education Benefits: The government offers several programs to assist military personnel in furthering their education. One such program is the GI Bill, which covers most, if not all, tuition and fees at public universities and a significant portion at private institutions. This bill also provides a housing allowance and a stipend for course materials.

2. Vocational Training: The military provides intensive training in a wide variety of fields, which extends beyond combat-related capabilities. These can range from nuclear engineering to healthcare, various trades, electronics, and more.

3. Healthcare and Life Insurance: Military personnel are covered by TRICARE, which provides comprehensive health insurance, and are also provided with affordable life insurance options.

4. Housing and Basic Allowances: Enlisted service members are typically given a housing stipend, or they can choose to live in on-base housing. A basic allowance for subsistence is also provided, which covers food costs.

5. Retirement Benefits: Long-term military members are usually entitled to a pension after 20 years of service. The recent shift to the Blended Retirement System also allows members to benefit from a 401(k)-like plan, even if they don't make the military a career.

6. Veterans Benefits: After leaving the service, veterans have access to a number of benefits, including home loans guaranteed by the Veterans Administration (VA), job training, hiring preference for certain government jobs, and more.

Just remember that benefits can vary depending on whether you enlist in active duty or choose to join the reserves, so it might be beneficial to speak with a military recruitment officer who can provide more detailed, personal advice.
