Chemistry Degree and Military Service. Any Connections?

Hi, all! I'm thinking of studying chemistry in college and I'm also thinking of eventually joining the military. However, I've been wondering if my Chemistry degree could have any bearing on this path. Is there any intersection between the fields of Chemistry and Military Service? Will it benefit my military career or rank advancement in any way? I'm really keen on understanding this. Thanks!

Sure, a degree in Chemistry can actually be beneficial in various roles within the military. In the armed forces, there are a number of occupational specialties where subject matter expertise in chemistry might be especially useful.

For instance, in the Army, there's the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Specialists (MOS 74D). These professionals are trained to manage, train, and maintain protective gear that is used in CBRN response situations. They operate CBRN detection and decontamination equipment, provide training and advice, and establish CBRN defense measures.

In the Navy, there are nuclear technicians, as well as Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs), who often need strong chemistry backgrounds. MLTs conduct tests on tissue, blood, and bodily fluids, and the results of these tests can be used by doctors to diagnose and treat diseases. Naval nuclear technicians, on the other hand, are tasked with the operation and maintenance of naval nuclear propulsion plants and equipment, and a strong understanding of chemistry can certainly help in this role as well.

There might also be opportunities in research and development (R&D) divisions, where chemists help in developing new military technologies or enhancing existing systems.

Furthermore, having a degree often allows one to enlist at a higher pay grade and could prove helpful during promotions later in your military career. The specific education requirements to receive a promotion vary among branches of the military.

Indeed, the intersection between chemistry and military service might not be apparent at first glance, but the application and scope are quite substantial when considered carefully. Do assure to research further based on which specific branch resonates with you. Best of luck with your future endeavors!
