Is a degree necessary to join the military?

Hey y'all, I'm a Junior and I am debating college. My family really wants me to get a degree but honestly, I've been considering the military more and more lately. Has anyone joined the military upon high school grad? Is a degree truly necessary for that path?

Hi there! You're mapping out some big decisions for yourself, which is great to see.

To directly answer your question, no, a degree is not required to enlist in the military. Most branches of the military, including the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, accept recruits with a high school diploma or a GED. You'd go through basic training and then receive job training in your chosen field, and you can even rise through the enlisted ranks without pursuing higher education.

However, if you're interested in becoming an officer, a four-year degree is usually required. Officer programs tend to be competitive and require strong leadership skills. Officers have additional responsibilities but are also paid more and receive greater benefits. If becoming an officer is your goal, you might consider ROTC programs or a service academy, where you earn a degree while training to become a military officer.

So, while a degree isn't necessary for enlistment, it could open up different paths and opportunities within the military. Please consult with your school counselor or reach out to a local recruiter for more personalized advice. You may also want to consider discussing your thoughts with anyone you know who's currently serving or has served in the military. I'm glad you're thinking critically about your future, and wish you the best on your journey.
