Deconstructing the SAT Test

Hi guys, I'm sure this question has been asked a thousand times but I could use a refresher. What exactly is on the SAT test? What kinds of things do they ask? I could use some pointers to know what I should start studying.

Hello there,

The SAT is a standardized test that measures a student's math and verbal reasoning skills, which are meant to reflect what they've learned in high school and what they need to succeed in college.

As of spring 2024, per the College Board, the SAT has become fully digital. The new structure is divided into two sections:

1. Reading and Writing: This portion is further divided into two 32-minute modules, with a total of 54 questions (about 71 seconds per question). The reading section includes passages from U.S. and World Literature, History/Social Studies, and Science. For the writing, you'll have to improve or correct sentences based on the context of paragraphs or the entire passage.

2. Math: This is also divided into two 35-minute modules, with a total of 44 questions (about 96 seconds per question). You're allowed to use your calculator on both math modules. The Math section tests your understanding and ability to solve problems in areas like algebra, problem-solving & data analysis, and some advanced math concepts.

The total duration of the digital SAT is 134 minutes, or about two hours and fifteen minutes, with 98 questions in total.

One general tip to start with is to become comfortable with the test format by practicing with sample questions or practice tests. The Bluebook™ app is a good tool for this, as it allows you to preview the digital SAT and even take a full-length practice test. You should also focus on improving time management skills since each section is timed, and every minute counts.

Remember to devote time to both Verbal and Math sections. For math, concentrate on the basics of Algebra, advanced algebra, geometry, and some trigonometry. For the Verbal part, improving vocabulary, comprehension, and grammar is crucial.

Good luck in your journey with SAT preparation!
