High School GPA

Hey everyone! A little help here, I'm honestly lost about how my high school GPA is calculated. Can someone explain the process to me? I keep hearing about weighted and unweighted and it's all just over my head.

Absolutely, happy to shed some light on this.

First, let's talk about the unweighted GPA. This calculation is straightforward with a 4.0 scale. An 'A' (90-100%) typically gets a 4.0, a 'B' (80-89%) gets a 3.0, a 'C' (70-79%) gets a 2.0, a 'D' (60-69%) gets a 1.0, and an 'F' (0-59%) gets a 0.0. To calculate your unweighted GPA, you add up all the GPA points from your classes and divide by the number of classes you've taken.

Now, for the weighted GPA. This calculation gives extra points for more rigorous courses. For instance, an 'A' in an AP, IB, or Honors class could be worth a 5.0 rather than a 4.0, and a 'B' would be worth a 4.0 rather than a 3.0. But not all schools operate on a 5.0 scale - some use a 6.0 scale and others don't weight GPAs at all.

Your cumulative GPA is the average of your GPA from every semester of high school to date. So each semester's grades will affect the cumulative GPA.

One thing to note, each school might calculate GPA a bit differently. They may count pluses or minuses differently or weigh classes differently, so it's a good idea to check with your school counselor if you're unsure about your own GPA.

Let me know if there's anything else you're curious about!
