Do I need Insurance if I've Joined the Military?

Hey folks, quick question. If I join the military after high school, would I still need to have insurance? Or will the military cover my insurance needs? I'm a bit new to all this and could really use some help.

Hello! When you join the military, you become eligible to receive health coverage through the military's health care program called TRICARE. This comprehensive insurance program provides health care coverage to active duty military members, military retirees, and their dependents. TRICARE offers a range of benefits including medical, dental, vision, and mental health services.

Upon joining, TRICARE becomes your main health insurance provider, and any other insurance you might have becomes secondary. In other words, TRICARE coordinates with your other health insurance (if applicable) to determine who pays for what.

In addition to health insurance, the military also provides life insurance options through the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) program. SGLI is a low-cost term life insurance program for service members and eligible family members.

Finally, regarding car insurance, you will need to maintain your personal auto insurance as the military does not provide this type of coverage. If you're transitioning from being a civilian to being an active duty member and you plan to put your vehicle in storage, some insurance companies may offer reduced rates.

Overall, the military provides numerous benefits that cover most of the insurance needs of service members. But as with any major life change, it’s important to research and understand these benefits so you can make the best decisions for your situation.
