What's Next? Joining Military with a Liberal Arts Degree

Looking for some advice here. If someone studied liberal arts and then decided they wanted to join the military, how might that work out? Could a liberal arts background be beneficial in the military? Would love to hear any thoughts or experiences!

Certainly, a liberal arts degree could have many advantages in the military. First and foremost, the broad base of knowledge you've gained might be extremely beneficial. In the liberal arts, you've likely developed strong writing, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, all of which would be beneficial in any military role.

For example, officers in many branches of the military often find themselves in leadership roles where these sorts of skills are paramount. Further, some specific areas within the military, such as military intelligence or public affairs, would directly benefit from these competencies developed through a liberal arts education.

Additionally, some branches of the military offer Officer Candidate School (OCS) or Officer Training School (OTS) as a pathway for degree holders to enter into a leadership role. As a degree holder, you also might be eligible for a Direct Commission, which could place you in a specialized role directly related to your skills or areas of interest, like public affairs, legal, medical, or chaplain services.

Remember that the basis of a liberal arts degree is versatility and adaptability to different situations, thought processes, and issues. These are extremely valued traits in the military, as problem-solving in the field frequently requires the ability to think critically and adapt to ever-changing scenarios.

From another perspective, veterans often highlight many of the soft skills they learned in the military such as leadership, adaptability, resilience, and teamwork. These can be readily applied in a corporate or civilian job post-military, making for a more fluid transition. Now, imagine complementing these with a background in liberal arts—a well-rounded package indeed!

Just bear in mind that joining the military is a major commitment and it's important to thoroughly research and consider your decision. Speaking with a military recruiter, exploring official military websites, and reaching out to current service members or veterans for their personal experiences could be beneficial next steps.
