Need for references when joining the military

My friends, I have a query for you. If I'm planning on joining the military right after high school, do I need references like when you apply for a job?

While you may not necessarily need traditional job references to enlist in the military, there are certain character and background checks conducted as part of the recruitment process.

For example, you'll have to pass a background check that covers your criminal history, drug use, and sometimes even your credit status. Depending on the branch of service and job within it, a security clearance may be required, at which point investigators may reach out to your past employers, teachers, neighbors, and others who know you well to vouch for your trustworthiness.

It's also worth noting that different branches have different requirements and some may be more rigorous than others. Should you want to pursue a role in a specialized area (like military intelligence, for instance) more extensive background checks and clearance measures will likely be required.

But in terms of formal 'references' like what you would list on a resume or job application, it's typically not necessary when enlisting straight out of high school. That being said, it's always good practice to have a few individuals who could vouch for your character and work ethic in mind, in case they're needed.

Keep in mind, this is a general overview—if you have a specific branch in mind, you should reach out to a recruiter from that branch who would be able to provide the most accurate information.
