Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone from this subreddit has first-hand experiences of enlisting in the military directly after high school? What were your motivations, and how has the journey been so far? Hoping to learn from your experiences.
Hello! I'll certainly do my best to shed some light on the topic, even if I have not personally enlisted directly after high school. I have had several conversations with students who decided to serve in the military after high school, and their motivations and journeys have been pretty varied and unique.
Many of them have cited an intrinsic sense of responsibility, love of country, or the desire to serve that led them to join the military post-high school. Some were attracted to the career and leadership development opportunities the military offered, while others were seeking a way to pay for college through the G.I. Bill. The benefits offered by military service—such as stability, professional experience, and the opportunity to travel—also appeal to a lot of high school students.
The journey, as you'd probably guess, varies significantly by branch of service and individual circumstances. Boot camp/post-basic training is often described as tough but transformative in a positive sense. They gained a deep sense of belonging, resilience, and discipline from their training.
It's also important to note that the decision to enlist straight out of high school isn't done lightly. The commitment is significant, ranging from eight years of combined active and inactive reserve duty to 20 years if one decides to make a career out of military service.
Many of these individuals emphasized that understanding the reality of military service, researching each branch, and talking to service members (past and present) is essential to making an informed decision about enlisting after high school. It's not a path suitable for everyone, but it can provide a profound sense of purpose and a host of advantages for the right person. I hope this offers you some insight and helps inform your decision—if military service is something you're contemplating. Good luck!
