Is joining the military in high school possible?

Hey everyone, I'm a high school junior curious to find out if it's possible to enlist in the military before graduating from high school. More specifically, can you start the process while still in high school then finalize joining post-graduation? I feel that would give me a head start, and I'm anxious to serve. Any input is appreciated.

Hi there,

Yes, it is indeed possible to start the process of enlisting in the military while you're still in high school, although you won't officially enlist until after graduation. You would do so through programs such as the Delayed Entry Program (DEP). With DEP, you can commit to enlisting in the military (usually up to a year) before you graduate. You don't start your military service until after you graduate from high school, but you would sign your enlistment contract and even swear in before graduating.

Keep in mind that while this might be a good option if you're 100% sure about your decision, you should think carefully before proceeding. Joining the military is a significant commitment, and while it can provide various benefits (like job training, college tuition assistance, etc), it's not the right path for everyone.

Always make sure you're well-informed about what you're signing up for. The military has physical requirements, can demand relocation, and may result in deployment. Speak with a recruiter for the branch of the military you're interested in, ask a lot of questions, and perhaps even seek advice from veterans to get a broad understanding of what service entails. Additionally, consider discussing your intent with a school counselor or trusted adult—they may provide valuable insights and support to help you with this decision.

While awaiting enlistment, you might also want to consider joining JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) if your school offers it. Participating in this program can provide some familiarity with military practices and expectations, which might help in preparing you for your eventual service.

Hope this information helps, and best of luck with your decision! You're considering a path that involves selflessness and commitment—traits to be admired.
