Can any degree be beneficial when you decide to join the Military?

I've noticed there are a few specific degrees often mentioned when talk turns to joining the military after college. But what if I end up majoring in something less 'traditional'? Assume I end up majoring in Arts or English, will there still be benefits?

Certainly, any degree can be beneficial when you decide to join the military. The military needs a wide range of skills and expertise, not just those traditionally associated with defense and security. In fact, one of the military’s greatest strengths is its diversity in terms of skills, abilities, and knowledge.

Consider a degree in English, for instance. English majors are known for their strong communication skills. They excel in written and oral communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving. These are all invaluable skills in the military, whether you're drafting written communiques, briefing teams, or analyzing complex problems in high-stress environments. Moreover, individuals with a grounding in English or other liberal arts subjects can bring valuable perspectives to their military service, including a broad understanding of the world, cultures, and people, and an ability to think creatively and strategically.

Similarly, Arts majors often have unique creative thinking and problem-solving skills that can be beneficial in a military setting. They are used to thinking outside the box and can bring fresh ideas and perspectives wherever they go. They are also likely to have strong visual communication skills, which could be useful in many military contexts.

Of course, it's also critical to note that your success in the military won't solely depend on your academic degree. Physical fitness, ability to work in a team, leadership skills, ability to make quick decisions under stress - these all play a significant role.

So to answer your question, yes, all degrees, including those in Arts and English, can certainly provide advantages in a military career. It's all about how you leverage and apply the skills you've learned from your college major.
