What’s the location like at Grand Canyon University (GCU)?

Hey friends, junior here and I’ve been considering Grand Canyon University (GCU) as one of my top choices. I don't live in Arizona, so I don't have much knowledge about the place. Can anyone fill me in on where GCU is located, and what's it like to live there?

Grand Canyon University (GCU) is located in Phoenix, the capital and most populous city in Arizona. Living in Phoenix, you'll be able to enjoy a mix of urban and suburban culture along with relatively warm weather year-round. Phoenix is known for its hot summers, so be prepared for that! It also has a lower humidity level than many other parts of the U.S., so the heat is a bit different here.

The school itself is located in West Phoenix. Just for the heads up, you will find that West Phoenix is a mostly residential area with a mix of urban sprawl and neighborhoods. Thus, GCU's immediate surroundings might not be bustling with activity in the same way campus might be in a city or a college town.

However, despite being located in a residential area, the campus is not too far away from the downtown Phoenix area. Downtown Phoenix, which is roughly a 20-minute drive from the campus, has a lot to offer in terms of sporting events, concerts, restaurants, museums, art galleries, and other cultural activities. There's really no shortage of things to do if you're willing to get out and explore a bit!

As for getting around, you might find having a car useful for getting off-campus and exploring the surrounding areas. However, GCU also offers a free shuttle service for students to key locations in the community which could be convenient.

In terms of nature and outdoor activities, Phoenix won't disappoint. The city is surrounded by desert and mountainous landscapes, so there are ample opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and other outdoor pursuits. You're also only a few hours away from the Grand Canyon, which could be a great spot for a weekend getaway!

Always remember that everyone's experience can greatly vary based on personal preferences. Some people thrive in the hustle and bustle of a big city, while others prefer a more relaxed pace of life. It's always a good idea to try and visit the campus and its surroundings, if possible, before making your final decision.
