Public universities options in California?

Yo fellow students, I'm looking at applying to some public universities in Cali, but I'm not sure where to start. Any pointers on some of the big names or maybe some hidden gems?

Hello there! California is spoiled for choices when it comes to public universities with a range of schools from large, well-known institutions to smaller gems that might not be as well-known but can offer a great education.

Starting with some of the larger, more prominent names, there's the University of California system which comprises nine campuses: UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz. These universities are renowned for their academics and research. For instance, UC Berkeley is celebrated for its computer science and engineering programs, while UCLA has strong programs in things like biology, psychology, and political science.

On the other hand, the California State University (CSU) system is one of the largest public university systems in the country with 23 campuses. This includes Cal State LA, Cal State Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, and San Diego State among others. They offer numerous programs and can be a great option, often with a more affordable price tag compared to the UC's.

For some hidden gems, you might not hear as much about CSU Channel Islands or CSU Monterey Bay, but they also offer a variety of programs in a smaller, more intimate setting.

So, to narrow down your choices, consider your intended major, the campus size and culture you prefer, potential career opportunities in the area, and also your financial situation. All these factors together can help you identify the public universities in California that would be the best fit for you. And remember to visit the campuses, if possible, to get a real sense of what life could be like there. Best of luck in your search!
