James Madison University vs University of Virginia. Thoughts?

Hello everyone! James Madison University and University of Virginia are both on my radar for college application. However, I'm having trouble making a choice between JMU and UVA – I have no idea which one aligns better with my goals. Anyone got any thoughts or experiences to share? Thanks!

Sure! I'll compare these two universities in a few areas that might help your decision:

1. Academic Rigor and Reputation: UVA has a stronger and more competitive reputation, which could benefit you long-term in job searches or applying to graduate schools. It's part of the Public Ivy league and is generally more challenging academically.

2. Size: James Madison University is a medium-sized school with less than 20,000 undergraduates while UVA has about 24,000. This may not seem like a substantial difference, but the campus community and available resources can vary significantly between these two sizes.

3. Student life: Both have a vibrant student life, but they each have a unique campus culture. UVA, being in Charlottesville, has a slightly trendier feel with access to vineyards, hiking, and culture, while JMU in Harrisonburg has a more traditional college-town environment.

4. Degrees offered: It's also important to consider your intended major. UVA's McIntire School of Commerce, Curry School of Education and Human Development, and College of Arts and Sciences are all well-regarded, for instance. Meanwhile, JMU is known for its strong programs in business, nursing, communication, and the social sciences.

5. Cost: Review the net price calculators of both universities to get an idea about the financial implications.

6. Graduate Outcomes: Check out the career services websites of both schools, which often publish data about job placement rates, salaries, and more.

Of course, it's encouraged that you visit both of these schools (either virtually or in-person) to get a better feel for where you'd be most comfortable and productive. Ultimately, the decision should be based on your personal preference and long-term goals after considering all these factors.
