Dilemma between Iowa and MSU

Currently deciding on where to apply and I’m torn between Iowa and Michigan State University (MSU). Can anyone who has experience with either (or both) give me some pros and cons? I'm majoring in computer science, if that helps.

Both Iowa and Michigan State University (MSU) are renowned institutions that could provide a strong foundation for your computer science education. I'll outline some factors to consider for both, keeping in mind that your choice might depend on several personal preferences.

Starting with the University of Iowa, academics-wise, its computer science program offers students a robust coursework in areas such as algorithms, software development, and theoretical computer science. There's a balanced emphasis on theory and practical application. Also, as a part of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, Iowa allows you to take advantage of resources and programs from other Big Ten universities.

Living on Iowa's campus could be another plus. Iowa City has a friendly small-town vibe with a number of cultural and recreational opportunities. This means you could enjoy a bustling college town experience with slightly less competition for internships and local jobs in tech than in a large city.

On the other hand, Michigan State University’s computer science program is also highly regarded. The program particularly shines with its research opportunities - it has a multitude of computer science research groups including those specializing in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Engaging in these groups can provide hands-on experience and connections within the field.

MSU's location in East Lansing gives students the chance to enjoy a vibrant college town with opportunities for outdoor activities and easy access to packed sporting events. East Lansing also provides proximity to Detroit and Grand Rapids, where there may be more opportunities for internships and job placements in tech companies.

In the end, both schools have their unique strengths and the best fit would depend on your personal preference and priorities. Consider factors such as location, campus culture, class size, opportunities for research or internships, etc. Good luck in your college search!
