Hey folks, I've got family in Evanston, IL and I'm thinking of applying to colleges around there. Anyone have recommendations which colleges I should look into?

Hello there! Good to hear that you're looking into colleges near Evanston, IL. This area does have a range of colleges and universities for various interests and pursuits.

First and foremost, in Evanston itself, there is Northwestern University, a prestigious private institution known for its strong programs in journalism, economics and theatre, among others. As a member of the Big Ten Conference, it also offers a vibrant athletic scene. Just keep in mind that Northwestern is highly selective, with a typically low single-digit admission rate.

Not far from Evanston, you can find a number of colleges in Chicago. The University of Chicago is one of the top-ranked institutions in the world and is known for its intense academic culture. It caters to a wide array of fields, but its economics, sociology, and political science programs are particularly well-regarded.

A bit farther south in Chicago, you'll find the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). This is a large public university with a diverse student body and a wide range of programs to choose from. UIC has strong offerings in health sciences and is home to one of the largest medical schools in the U.S.

Loyola University Chicago, a private Catholic university located by the water, is also an option. Known for its programs in social work, business, and nursing, Loyola places a strong emphasis on service and ethics.

For small liberal arts schools, check out Lake Forest College, located in Lake Forest, IL, which is north of Evanston and closer to the suburbs. This college is known for its intimate class sizes and personalized learning environment.

That's a start, but the 'right' college will depend on what you're looking for in terms of campus culture, academic offerings, cost, and so forth. Happy researching!
