Cost of attending Iowa as an out-of-state student

Hi all! Does anyone know how much tuition is for out-of-state students who want to study in Iowa? I've been looking at some of their universities and programs, but I’m not really sure about the financial aspect. Do they have scholarships for out-of-staters?

For the University of Iowa, which is a popular institution in the state, here's the fee breakdown for out-of-state students for 2024-2025:

- Tuition: Approximately $34,000 per year

- Room and board: Approximately $13,000 per year

- Books and supplies: Approximately $1,000 per year

- Miscellaneous expenses: Approximately $2,000 per year

Overall, when you add all these up, you can expect to pay about $49,000 even before considering transportation cost to and from home, personal expenses, and others.

As for scholarships, the good news is that the University of Iowa does offer scholarships for out-of-state students. The most notable one is The Iowa Scholarship for the Arts, which awards $1,500 to selected incoming out-of-state first-year students.

There is also the National Scholars Award for non-resident students. This scholarship is highly competitive and the amounts awarded range from $2,000 to full tuition. The award is renewable for an additional three years provided the recipient maintains certain academic standards.

It's always a good idea to explore various scholarships, grants, and work-study opportunities to help offset the cost. You can also use net price calculators available on the university's financial aid website to gain a clearer understanding of what you'll need to pay after accounting for scholarships and grants.

Remember to submit your FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1 to increase your chances of receiving federal, state, and institutional aid.
