What college essay topics to avoid?

So, as I'm brainstorming for my college essays, I realized some topics might be overdone or not well-received. Could you guys share some advice on which topics are generally considered no-gos for college essays? I want to represent myself well without falling into any cliches or sensitive areas.

When crafting your college essays, avoiding overused topics is indeed a smart move. By now, admissions officers have seen countless essays on common themes like scoring the winning goal, community service trips that changed a student's life in just a week, overcoming an injury, and the death of a family member/pet. While these topics can be meaningful, they often fail to stand out in a sea of similar stories.

Additionally, steer clear of controversial subjects like politics or religion unless you have a very nuanced, personally impactful story that shows insight and reflection without preaching. Essays about illegal or immoral activities are an absolute no-go; keep in mind the character and judgment you're displaying to the reader. Writing about privilege without acknowledgment of self-awareness or the broader context can also come across as tone-deaf.

Instead, focus on topics that reveal your unique perspective, intellectual curiosity, and personal growth. An example would be how a particular passion project or hobby has shaped your worldview or the way you've handled a challenging situation that showcases resilience or problem-solving. Remember, the best essays often come from seemingly mundane experiences that are written with a thoughtful and reflective voice. The aim is to give the admissions committee a window into who you are beyond your grades and test scores.
