Is it possible to serve in the military while still in high school?

Hello all, I'm currently in my junior year of high school and would love to start my military training. Is it possible to serve in the military even while still in high school or do I need to wait until I graduate?

While you may be eager to start serving, it's important to understand the enlistment process. Generally, the minimum age to enlist in the United States military is 17 with parental consent or 18 without consent. That means as a high school junior, you could potentially start the enlistment process with your parents’ permission.

However, even though you'd be enlisted, you wouldn't begin your military service right away. Your training (Basic Training or Boot Camp) would not start until after you've graduated from high school. This is because the military places a high importance on education and wants its members to have at least a high school diploma.

If you're looking to start soon, you might consider joining the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) if your school offers it. This program offers high school students a taste of military training while still in high school, without a service obligation.

Finally, the Delayed Entry Program (DEP) allows you to commit to enlist in the military up to a year before you report for training. This could potentially be done during your senior year of high school, allowing you to secure your place in the military while completing your education.

Regardless of your decision, it's crucial to discuss this with your parents and guidance counselors to understand more about the commitments involved. They can provide advice tailored to your specific situation and goals.
