Insight on Free Military High Schools

Hi guys, I'm considering a free military high school for various reasons. Does anyone here have any insights to share? How does the school/curriculum/environment compare to regular public high schools?

Military high schools can offer a unique path for students interested in a disciplined academic environment with leadership opportunities. What can set these schools apart from regular public schools is their focus on structure, discipline, and personal development, aligned often with a military-style framework.

Curriculum-wise, military high schools often mirror standard academic classes in public schools, but with an enhanced focus on skills like leadership, team-work, and responsibility. The curriculum will cover the same standard subjects—English, Math, Science, Social Studies - but will also integrate courses that are more military-oriented, like JROTC classes. In essence, you'll be expected to meet the same academic standards required in other high schools, but in a more disciplined, regimented environment.

In terms of school environment, you'll likely find that military high schools are more structured and disciplined. Some of these schools have uniforms, conduct regular inspections, and instill a strict adherence to a daily schedule. Students often live on campus and there are typically physical training requirements as well. You'll see an emphasis on leadership development, often through a student-led chain of command which mirrors military ranks, and various character-building practices, including community service requirements.

It's important to note that the 'military-style' does not necessarily mean these institutions are streamlined towards military careers. While these schools do offer a unique pathway for those interested in pursuing military service post-high school, they also aim to build skills that will serve students in any career field.

That said, every school is unique, and the atmosphere, rigor, and emphasis on the military-style structure can vary. It's a good idea to do your research and perhaps set up a visit to any schools you're considering. Ask them questions about their student life, curriculum, and post-graduation paths of their alumni to make sure you’re making an informed choice.
