New York Military High Schools - Yay or Nay?

Hello 👋! Lifelong New Yorker here considering a military high school for a change of scenery. Anyone have some first-hand experience or know some credible military high schools in NY?

Absolutely, New York indeed has some highly respected military schools that play a stellar role in shaping discipline, leadership, and providing a structured academic environment.

A very well-known option is the New York Military Academy (NYMA) in Cornwall-on-Hudson. NYMA offers a college-preparatory curriculum for grades 8-12 and is known for its challenging academic program and emphasis on personal growth through discipline and leadership training.

Additionally, the Christian Brothers Academy in Albany is another military school with an excellent reputation, providing a strong academic curriculum, JROTC training, and a wide array of extracurricular activities.

La Salle Institute in Troy is a third option. It intertwines military discipline with a strong foundation of Catholic values, offering a stimulating academic environment from grades 6 through 12.

Do note, these schools aren't for everyone. The structured format, heavy discipline, and extensive commitment may not suit every learner's style. It's also essential to consider how this choice would influence future career choices or college applications, as some may perceive military schools differently. If possible, I'd suggest planning a visit, speaking with the school community, or perhaps connecting with current students or alumni. This can provide a much more nuanced understanding of whether or not the military high school route is the best fit.

Keep in mind, too, that each of these schools also come with tuition costs, and financial aid or scholarships may or may not be available depending on the institution.

Good luck in making your decision!
