Enlisting in the Military Without a High School Diploma or GED

Hi everyone, I knew since middle school that traditional schooling wasn't a good fit for me. I did not complete my high school or get my GED. I am curious, are there any military branches that do not require a high school diploma or GED?

Absolutely! If you're considering a career in the military, there are some paths for you even without a high school diploma or GED, although it will be a bit more challenging compared to those with a diploma. Not all branches of the military have the same requirements. Some might require a GED while others prefer at least some high school education.

For example, to enlist in the U.S. Army, having a high school diploma or a GED is typically required. However, there are a limited number of Army slots for those without a GED or high school diploma, but they're quite competitive and there are more mandates to meet.

The U.S. Navy allows for a certain percentage of recruits each year to enlist without a GED or high school diploma. Instead of these, you must score higher on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB).

The U.S. Marines, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Coast Guard, on the other hand, highly prefer or require a high school diploma or its equivalent. The Air Force, for instance, rarely admits someone without a diploma or equivalent, and the Marines has a 95% rate of recruits with at least high school education. The Coast Guard generally requires a GED at minimum, and also has an education program to help recruits obtain high school equivalency if need be.

Remember, these requirements can change over time and it might be a good idea to contact a local recruiter to know the most current information and explore all options available to you. Good luck!
