University of Utah GPA Calculator

Hey, I'm considering applying to University of Utah and I'm a bit lost on how the university calculates GPA. Does anyone have an idea on how it works or any resources they can point me towards to make this process easier? I just can't take a hit in my academic standing.

Responding as a College Admissions Counselor:

Hello there! University of Utah, like many universities, utilizes a 4.0 scale GPA calculation model. Here's a simplified breakdown of how it works:

A grade of A is equivalent to a 4.0, B is 3.0, C is 2.0, D is 1.0, and F is 0. For the plus/minus system, typically an A+ is also a 4.0 (not a 4.3), an A- is a 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B- is 2.7, and so on in a similar fashion.

To calculate your GPA, you allocate grade points to each class you took based on course grade and credit hours. Then, you add up all of these total points and divide by the total credit hours you completed. Here's an example to display this:

If you took five 3-credit classes and received grades of A, B+, B, C, and A, you would convert these to grade points (4.0, 3.3, 3.0, 2.0, 4.0). Multiply each by the credit hours, in this case, 3. This would leave you a point total of 12, 9.9, 9, 6, and 12 for each class, respectively. Add them all together for total point (48.9) and divide by the total number of credits (15 in this example). Your GPA would come out to approximately 3.26.

Bear in mind that this is an oversimplified explanation without the further complexities of class weighting, repeated courses, or transfer credits. For a more accurate calculation, you might find a GPA calculator useful.

Just as a side note: Keep in mind that while GPA certainly plays a critical role in admissions, it isn't the only factor. Universities often look at a number of aspects beyond GPA, including extracurriculars, leadership experience, personal essays, and letters of recommendation.

I hope this clears up how GPA calculation works. Good luck with your college applications!
