Difference between a regular high school and a military academy?

I'm a sophomore considering my options for next year and a military academy high school popped on my radar. But I'm not sure what the core difference is compared to a regular high school. Any insights, guys?

Military academies and traditional high schools have notable differences, mostly in the way they structure student life and academic opportunities.

Regular high schools offer a more typical adolescent experience. Student life includes partaking in extracurricular activities, attending school dances or events, and generally, you'll have more freedom to form your own schedule. Your curriculum will vary depending on the school district, level of courses (regular, honors, AP), and elective choices, but it won't have a specific focus besides helping you graduate with a broad knowledge base.

On the other hand, military academies, also known as military schools, have a unique focus on character development, leadership, and discipline, aside from offering a broad curriculum. At a military academy, in addition to academic classes, you'd also participate in JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps) or similar programs. Under this program, you would take part in more rigid routines, including uniform inspections, drills, and physical training. There might be less flexibility as your day-to-day activities are more structured, aiming to instill discipline, responsibility, and respect. Additionally, some military schools provide opportunities for specialized courses in areas like aerospace science or naval science. For someone considering a future in the military, this could be a beneficial pathway.

Keep in mind, military academies won't necessarily commit you to a military career. They simply offer a distinct style of education that incorporates military principles.
