Alternatives for High School Dropouts: Military?

First off, big props to everyone on this sub for supporting each other! Strange question here, but does anyone know if there're specific military options for high school dropouts? A friend of mine recently dropped out and is considering a military path, so I wanted to check and see if it's feasible. Any info would be appreciated.

Your question isn't strange at all! It shows a great deal of concern and empathy for your friend. As for your question, yes, there are military options for individuals who have not completed high school, but it's often more challenging.

For the U.S. military, the enlisted recruitment standards typically require applicants to have a high school diploma. However, each branch of the military does also accept a certain number of recruits who have a GED. The Army, for example, allows about 10% of its enlisted ranks to be GED holders.

That being said, the competition for the slots is higher among GED holders. So, while it's not impossible to join with a GED, it is more difficult.

It's also worth noting that each case is evaluated individually, with factors such as a person's skills, physical fitness, and ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) scores playing a role.

Your friend should also remember that vocational and technical schools, community colleges, and adult education centers provide opportunities to earn a high school diploma or GED. And completing these could pave the way for more abundant opportunities, be it in the military or in the civilian world. That could be a possible path to investigate further.

Finally, consulting with a military recruiter can offer valuable insights into specific requirements and options, helping your friend make a more informed decision.
