California Military High Schools: Thoughts?

Hi all, I'm a California resident and lately I've been considering military high schools in my home state. Can anybody here shed some light on the pros and cons of these schools? Also, any suggestions for specific military schools to look into in Cali?

Hello, military high schools can be a good fit for students who thrive within a structured environment because they provide rigorous academic programs alongside physical fitness, character education, and leadership development training. Many claim that the discipline and associated life skills instilled in these schools are invaluable and serve them well beyond high school.

Here are a few pros to consider:

1. Leadership Opportunities: Military high schools often provide abundant leadership opportunities that can sometimes exceed those typically found in traditional public or private schools.

2. Physical Training: These schools emphasize physical fitness, so if you're naturally athletic or active, this might suit you.

3. Structured Environment: The structured and disciplined environment might be beneficial for any student craving this type of routine and organization.

However, military high schools are not for everyone and there are several potential drawbacks:

1. Lack of Choice: The structured routine might limit personal freedom in terms of choices, like deciding on extracurricular activities.

2. Physical Demands: The physical demands might be a challenge for students not accustomed to rigorous physical activities or those who primarily have academic interests.

3. Limited Social Development: Some argue that attending such schools may limit interaction with different types of people, which could pose potential issues when transitioning into a more diverse society after graduation.

In terms of specifics, you might want to look into the Army and Navy Academy located in Carlsbad. This school offers students in grades 7-12 a unique and comprehensive experience which includes a strong academic focus, athletics program, and a robust leadership training module rooted in Honor, Integrity, and Respect.

There’s also the Oakland Military Institute in Oakland. This college preparatory academy serves grades 6-12 and is affiliated with the National Guard. Its goal is to create future leaders who are capable and responsible citizens.

Remember, it's crucial to tour the schools and speak with students and faculty to get a real sense of what the culture and academic programs are like. This way, you'll be better equipped to make an informed decision on whether or not a military high school is the best fit for you. Consider discussing your interests and personal learning style with school counselors, too, as they can provide additional insights.
