Standard Curriculum for High School Military History?

I'm currently in my junior year and seriously interested in military history. I know Oklahoma has some high schools that offer this as a class - does anyone know what the common standards for these classes here are? Like, what kind of content or skills are usually covered?

There are indeed several high schools in Oklahoma that offer military history as a class, which is a fantastic choice if you have an affinity for history, particularly the study of conflicts and how they shaped the world. When you take this course, you are likely to explore a broad range of historical periods, from ancient times to modern warfare.

You'll explore topics such as key battles, strategies, weapons, key figures, and causal effects of wars. Not only is this focused on American military history - encompassing major wars like the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World Wars, and recent conflicts - but international military history is also usually covered. For example, you may delve into the Napoleonic Wars, or examine the strategies and impacts of Genghis Khan's conquests.

With regard to skills, military history courses aim to develop your critical thinking, analysis, and interpretative prowess. You'll find yourself interpreting primary sources like letters, diaries, maps, and photographs from different wars, which helps you to understand not only the factual aspects of military history but also the human experiences that underlie these conflicts.

Remember that while some schools might stress certain periods or themes, the actual curriculum can vary from school to school based on the instructor's expertise and interests, as well as the academic goals of the department. To get the most accurate information, you may want to reach out to the school or instructor that offers the course.

One last thing - studying military history in high school is undoubtedly beneficial if you’re considering pursuing related fields in college such as history, political science, or international relations. It provides a focused lens through which you can understand historical and contemporary global affairs. Best of luck with your studies!
