Thoughts on Military High Schools in Massachusetts?

High school junior here! Military high schools have been catching my attention recently, especially those in Massachusetts. Can anyone share their experiences with these schools or any details that might help me decide if they're a fitting choice?

Absolutely, military high schools can offer a unique and enriching educational experience. They're not for everyone, but if you're interested in potentially pursuing a career in the military or simply in disciplined, structured environments, they may be a great fit.

Massachusetts' main option for a military high school would be St. John's Northwestern Leadership Academies. This school is designed to provide rigorous academic education while fostering leadership skills, discipline, character development, and physical fitness.

At a military high school, you'll find a structured setting with a regimented daily routine, this could include morning physical training, uniform inspections, and marching drills in addition to your regular academic courses. The programs usually have a heavy emphasis on STEM subjects, but also provide a well-rounded education in the humanities and other subjects.

Many former students have pointed out that being a part of a military high school helped them develop leadership skills, a sense of responsibility, and gave them discipline and structure that benefited them later in life.

However, the structured and disciplined environment is not for everyone. A lot of personal freedoms, like choosing your own clothes, will be limited which can be a big adjustment compared to a regular high school.

Before deciding, I would highly recommend visiting the school campuses if you can, speaking to current students or alumni, and really thinking about whether a military-style education aligns with your personal goals and lifestyle preferences. Try to consider your long-term goals, career aspirations and whether the structure and discipline of a military school align with your personal preferences.

Remember, it's critical to find a setting where you feel you can thrive, not just survive. So, take your time, do thorough research, and make an informed decision.
