How Does the US Military View High School Diplomas?

Hi guys, I was just wondering how the US military values a high school diploma. Is it a requirement for all the branches? Or do they only consider it for certain roles or positions?

Every branch of the United States military values high school diplomas. It's one of the basic requirements for enlistment. Having a high school diploma shows that you have the basic academic skills and discipline to follow through on tasks.

As a matter of fact, the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard all prefer candidates who have high school diplomas over those with GEDs or alternative credentials. An individual with a High School Diploma is considered Tier 1, while an individual with a GED is considered Tier 2 in the eyes of the U.S military.

The reason for this is that the military invests significant time and resources in training new recruits, and they want to maximize their chances of success. Studies by the military have shown that Tier 1 candidates are more likely to finish their term of enlistment than those in Tier 2.

That said, the presence of a high school diploma does not guarantee entrance into the military. Recruits must also pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), a test that measures the abilities and competencies relevant to a range of military careers. The score one achieves on this test, along with the medical and background check, often determine what job or career paths are available to them within the military.

It is important to note, however, that these standards can vary in times of crisis or when recruiting numbers are down. In such instances, more waivers may be granted for individuals with GEDs. But even in these cases, having a high school diploma is advantageous.

For specific roles or officer positions, the military often requires not just a high school diploma, but a college degree. For instance, to become an officer in any branch of the military, a bachelor's degree is generally required. However, enlisted personnel have many opportunities for advancement and further education while serving.

It's always a good idea to do thorough research and talk to military recruiters if considering enlistment after high school. They can provide updated, detailed information about the requirements and opportunities available for high school graduates.
