Military vs. College Decision

A little stressed here, guys. I'm weighing my options between military or college after high school. Anyone else in the same boat or have advice about how to decide? Especially concerning financial aspects, future career prospects, personal growth, etc.

Completely understand how you might be feeling stressed with such a big decision on the horizon. Both the military and college have significant benefits, so let's unpack them a bit:

Financially speaking, there are noteworthy pros to both options. The military, for example, offers paid training, and includes benefits that cover housing, food, and health insurance. Additionally, the military can provide financial support for future education through the G.I. Bill, if you decide to pursue college later.

Alternately, with college, while the initial cost is typically quite high, earning potential increases significantly with a degree. A variety of scholarships, grants, and work-study opportunities can help offset these costs. Also, consider the financial aid packages offered by colleges, as some institutions like Harvard, for example, offer strong financial aid programs where families who earn less than $85,000 per year pay nothing towards the cost of attendance.

As far as career prospects go, both paths can open doors. The military provides a wide range of vocational training which often translates well into civilian careers. Meanwhile, a college degree remains a necessity for many high-paying jobs and can be pivotal for career advancement in certain industries.

Personal growth is a bit more subjective, depending on your individual goals and aspirations. The military can provide a structured environment that cultivates discipline, teamwork, and responsibility. On the other hand, the academic and social environment offered by college fosters intellectual growth and independence.

Reflect on what your future career might look like and your personality type, then perhaps speak with service members and college students to gain their insights. Both paths offer valuable experiences and opportunities. It's important that you use your values, goals, and financial situation as your primary guides.
