Expenses at the University of Miami?

I'm just a sunny Florida kid with big dreams of going to the U, but I've got some serious sticker shock looking at the cost. Does anybody here know what the total cost of attendance is for the University of Miami? What kind of financial aid packages have you seen they usually offer? Are there any scholarships I should be working towards?

The University of Miami indeed carries a relatively high sticker price. The estimated total cost of attendance for the 2024-2025 academic year, including tuition, fees, room and board, is around $93,000. However, this cost does not consider any financial aid or scholarships you may be awarded.

When looking at financial aid, it's important to keep in mind that the University of Miami has a need-based approach to financial aid. This means that the university would determine your eligibility for financial aid based on your family’s financial situation, so the packages can vary greatly from student to student. You can get an estimate of your potential financial aid package by using the net price calculator on the University of Miami's website. Just remember that this is an estimate and actual award packages can vary.

As a high school student, a good way to offset these costs is through merit-based scholarships. The University of Miami offers several types of scholarships. One of the big ones is the 'Canes Achievement Award, which offers annual scholarships of $5,000 to $16,000 to academically talented students. Then there is the Isaac Bashevis Singer Scholarship that covers the full cost of tuition for National Merit Finalists. Keep in mind that for most of these awards, you are automatically considered when you apply for admission, so no separate application is necessary, but stringent academic standards must be met.

Remember that external scholarships can help as well. Local organizations, online scholarship databases, and even some national corporations and nonprofits may offer scholarships. Be proactive in your search and apply to as many as possible to increase your chances of receiving additional funding.

Finally, be sure to fill out the FAFSA as soon as you're able. This opens up possibilities for federal aid and is a requirement for most institutional aid as well. The university's Financial Aid Office should be able to provide more guidance if you need further help. Good luck with your college application journey!
