Can a Military Spouse File Taxes for Deployed Spouse?

Hi everyone! Quick question. If I were to join the military and get deployed, could my spouse file my taxes for me back in the states? I'm from Virginia if that helps. I just want to be fully prepared and have all my ducks in a row beforehand. Thanks!

Yes, a spouse can indeed file taxes for their deployed partner, but there are certain steps and procedures you need to follow. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) allows a spouse to sign and file a joint tax return on behalf of their deployed partner. There are two ways to do this:

1. Filing a Joint Tax Return: If you're filing a joint tax return, your spouse can sign on your behalf. However, it's recommended that you provide a written statement, dated and signed, stating that you're away serving the country and expressly giving your spouse permission to sign for you.

2. Power of Attorney (POA): If you'd like your spouse to be able to ask the IRS about your return, make certain changes, or get refund information, you'll need to complete IRS Form 2848, "Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative." This form gives your spouse the power to act on your behalf. This is not required for filing, but would allow your spouse to handle any complications or issues with your return.

Keep in mind, if you have any state-specific taxes, the rules may vary by state. I would recommend checking with a tax advisor or reaching out to your State Department of Taxes for potential additional forms or documentation needed for Virginia state taxes.

Also, note that if you're in a combat zone, you're granted an automatic extension for filing your federal taxes, typically for 180 days after your last day in the combat zone.

In all situations, please consider consulting with a tax professional or accountant to ensure that these processes are handled correctly based on your unique situation. Good on you for planning this ahead of your deployment!
