Recently got my English essay back and it was a 17/20. Now I'm just wondering, if this was to be converted into a letter grade, what would it be? Does this consider a good mark?
You can think of your score in terms of percentages. 17 out of 20 would equate to 85%. This would typically be considered a "B" in the standard U.S. grading system, assuming your school uses an interval of 10 points for each letter grade (90-100=A, 80-89=B, etc.).
Generally, a grade in the "B" range is considered good and indicates that you have a solid understanding of the material and concepts. However, the context can also be important. For example, if the class average was much higher, you might want to aim for improvement. In any case, good job on your essay and keep striving for better!
