UMass Amherst Tuition Fees?

Hi folks, I'm looking at UMass Amherst for college and I'm trying to budget for the upcoming years. Can anyone give me a breakdown of the tuition fees and possibly other expenses related to attending UMass Amherst? It'd be awesome if someone could also share any advice on good scholarships to apply for that could help offset the costs.

UMass Amherst has different tuition rates for in-state and out-of-state students. For the 2024-2025 academic year, the cost of tuition for in-state students is approximately $17,772, while out-of-state students should expect to pay around $40,449. These figures may vary slightly depending upon your chosen course of study.

Room and board is approximately $16,710, and this applies to both in-state and out-of-state students. You'll also need to account for some miscellaneous costs, such as books, which average around $1,200. There might be some other smaller costs for things like lab or course fees.

For scholarships, you'll be automatically considered for most merit-based scholarships when you apply to UMass Amherst. The campus-based scholarships are typically awarded based on academic achievement, and you'll receive notification if you've qualified. Some of these scholarships can be quite substantial and significantly offset your tuition costs.

Additionally, you can use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to access federal financial aid options. Completing the FAFSA will also determine your eligibility for a Pell Grant, which is a need-based scholarship that doesn't need to be paid back.

Lastly, UMass has a good number of departmental scholarships, especially for students involved in research or with highly specific academic interests. Keep an eye on the financial aid website or department webpages for opportunities.

Remember to apply early both for admission and then for FAFSA to ensure the best chance of financial aid access. The deadlines for both can come up quicker than you'd think, so make sure to keep track of those.
