What should be the structure of a stellar college essay?

Hey everyone, I'm trying to get a head start on my application essays and I'm kinda lost on how to structure a really impressive college essay. Any advice on how to organize my thoughts and what elements make an essay stand out? Any dos and don'ts would be super helpful!

Hey there! Great to hear you're taking a proactive approach to your college essays. A compelling essay typically starts with a hook that grabs the reader's attention, then moves into an anecdote or personal story that can provide a window into who you are. Make sure to focus on showing rather than telling – which means using detailed narratives and examples to illustrate your points. As for structure, having a clear beginning, middle, and end that flow logically makes a huge difference. The most successful essays often reflect on how an experience has shaped you or demonstrates growth and character development. As for dos and don'ts, definitely do proofread your essay multiple times and get feedback from trusted mentors or teachers. Don't resort to clichés or try to guess what the admissions committee wants to hear. Be authentic and let your individual voice shine through. One student I worked with wrote about the lessons learned while repairing an old car with their grandfather, reflecting personal growth and tying it to their interest in engineering. It was unique and painted a vivid picture of their character. Best of luck with your writing!
