FBI Agents and Military Operations: What's the Deal?

I'm quite interested in both law enforcement and the military, and I've always wondered – do FBI agents ever get deployed on military operations? If they do, what does that look like, and under what circumstances might this occur?

FBI agents and military personnel typically perform distinct roles that are separate from each other due to differing missions and jurisdictions. The FBI, as a civilian law enforcement agency, primarily investigates federal crimes within the United States, while the military is tasked with national defense and conducts missions both domestically and internationally.

However, there can be a certain degree of overlap, particularly with regard to expertise sharing, training, and joint operations. For instance, the FBI has several specialized teams, such as the Hostage Rescue Team (HRT), which are often involved in high-risk operations that require military-level tactics and equipment. These teams often undergo training similar to that of military special operations units and can be deployed under certain circumstances for operations in connection with the US military. This could occur in scenarios, for instance, when there is a need for specialized investigative expertise or handling situations like terrorism, where the line blurs between crime and national defense.

Similarly, FBI agents might collaborate with military intelligence in instances of investigating international threats or incidents that have ties to the United States. However, it's important to note that such collaborations would still respect the boundaries set by law and policy that delineate the responsibilities and actions of civilian law enforcement and military personnel.

For instance, The Posse Comitatus Act limits the powers of the federal government in using federal military personnel to enforce domestic policies within the United States. Hence, even in such merged operations, military personnel and FBI agents would likely be performing distinct tasks catered to their own respective mandates.
